Remote Sensing

What did you learn about Remote Sensing and how it impacts our lives in Cedar Falls?

I learned that there are several steps in remote sensing. Some of the simplest things that occur on a daily basis within our community. Such as MRIs and PETs are just a few medical ways remote sensing is used.

I learned that in order to use remote sensing you must have a light source. this light source can be natural or man made. scientist and geographers and geologists use remote sensing to view something that is to large to view from a plane or that is to small to view with a microscope. they use remote sensing to paint a picture of the object that they want to see and they make the picture using rays from the light spectrum. people may also use remote sensing if they area that they want to view is inaccessible to humans and their equipment. Remote sensing uses views from the air or space and utilizes electromagnetic rays from many different places on the spectrum

An MRI is a medical process that is a noninvasive, non-x-ray diagnostic technique based on the magnetic fields of hydrogen atoms in the body. It produces many pictures (2D)of parts of the body so doctors can determine what is wrong with a patient without having to open them up surgically. This is a much easier way to explore the human body with less side effects when comparing it to surgery. A PET is a procedure in which a small amount of radioactive glucose is injected into a vein, and a scanner is used to make detailed, computerized pictures of areas inside the body where the glucose is used. Like the MRI is a non surgical procedure that can determine a problem with out being cut open.

Remote Sensing is used when something that a scientist wants to see isn't visible to the eye, they may use remote sensing to see it. They use electromagnetic rays, and they bounce the rays off of the small object, and then they can see it better. This is how some scientists know what atoms look like, while they really aren't visible with any microscope. Remote Sensing is also used for map making to find out distances of things. We use Remote Sensing is mostly so that we can examine something without necessarily even coming in direct contact with it.

I learned that remote sensing is used a lot in our area or can be used a lot in our area. It is very similar to recording the weather. It can be used many different ways. Remote sensing is used to make things easier to record. Something that rather small or something that is huge. I think remote sensing could be used to tell people when it is time to mow their yard. When it reaches a certain length a signal will alert you.

I have learned that remote sensing is more then it seems. It is use for many more things then satellite photos. Things like x-rays, MRI, brain scan, etc. the thing that you go to the doctor for. And now I understand how those little thing that we depend on work.

I learned that you need an energy source and radiation when energy travels from the target to the sensor. The sensor records the energy that has hit the sensor. The information is then transmitted electronically and processed into an image. The data is interpreted and then analyzed into something that can be used to solve a problem.

I learned that remote sensing is used for many different purposes. Probably the most common use of remote sensing is probably for weather forecasting. I did not know that remote sensing was used for this. I also learned that remote sensing depends a lot on light and other things that we learned about in science. I thought it was interesting that the spectrum of light had a practical application.
