Making Maps with ArcGIS
What has amazed you about ArcGIS while you have been creating your World and U.S. map project? Describe, in detail, two of the techniques you have used to create maps with the ArcGIS software.
One thing that suprised me about using tha arc gis program is the amount of data contained in the program. There are a ton of options that you can use to filter you map. My technique for making maps is to use layers that compliment each other. I try to make them related or they should have a direct/indirect relationship on each other. When I start making a map I usually think about what I want that map toshow, and then think about what leyers would do that.
The thing that surprised me most about arc gis is the amount of data that the program can hold and how much data you can put into a map. There are so many layers that you can add to your map in order to tell a story or to make it look good. To make my maps look good i choose colors and shapes that look good and i make sure that they match or compliment each other. i try to relate the layers to each other so there is a story that the map tells.
I really like this program. The great thing about it is you can make a ton of different types of maps. State maps and world maps, country maps. With these different types of maps you can add a ton of different layers on top of them. The thing I really like is how accurate everything is. Also how much information you can choose from to add to your map.
One of the best techniques I used to create maps on ArcGIS was to create a blank map, where I would test many of the features so I could implement them in a normal map that I would turn in. this surprised me a great because it worked quite efferently. Another thing that surprised me was the simplicity of the program; figuring stuff out turned out to be quite easy for me and there was a detailed help guide that helped me even more.
While using ArcGIS i have really been surprised by all the different data and abilities to show it with this program. The attribute that i have have used and liked the most was where you can limit down an area by population to decrease the amount of data showing. A second feature that has been nice to use is the feature of be able to edit and ad things such as the north arrow to a map to make it easier to read.
The ArcGIS mapping program is surprising how easy it is to pick up and use. The amount of data and layer combinations makes it easy to come up with maps describing things such as population, ethnicity, age, agriculture, climate, etc. I use that layers feature to create the exact place I want to show in the map and the data comparison feature to show how thing compare on the map.
What surprised me about arc gis is the variety of information that can be put on the maps. You can make maps that show patterns or make maps that provide basic information like elevation and country borders. What I try to do when I make maps is to take all the data that is provided from the program and connect all the layers on the map so it makes sense to others.
Something that surprised me in the ARCGIS program was that you can make everything so specific. For example, you can focus in on just one state in the US, and just include certain cities that are in that state. A techniuqe that I use is to have three layers that are related to eachother. The maps that I made were maps that I can see people needing, for example my map on interstates and cities. This is a good map because a traveler might need to know what interstates go through what cities, and which ones are the best ones to take to get to a destination. The second technique that I use is that I make the colors in my maps fit together. This is so that it isn't confusing to the person looking at the map. Last, I make the map so it isn't too busy to locate different things, and so the labels aren't intersecting with eachother.
One thing that has suprised me about the arc gis program is all the data you can get with it. You can add so many different layers and learn about that part of the world like where a volcano is, where the interstates are at, the major lakes and rivers, or the population of that certain country, state, or all over the world. I really like this program because you can make so many different types of maps.
