Students Debate Cell Requirement
In the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings of last year, cell phones with GPS receivers are being required at universities across the United States. Read the article "Students Debate Cell Requirement". Do you think GPS enabled cell phones should be required across university campuses? I don't think that they should be required because it is for their own protection, and students shouldn't be required to have this. I think that if some people's safety is really that important to them, then they should be able to have this feature on a cell phone, but it is a lot of extra money that some people don't have, especially if they don't even want a GPS enabled cell phone.
I do not think that GPS cell phones should be required on campuses. They could be some times when these would be useful, but it is also possible that a student could lose the phones or not bring them with them when they go out. I think that it would be a good idea for students who want more security to buy these, but it should not be required.
I do not think that students should be made to purchase a cell phone that has GPS incorporated into its systems. I think that it would be a good idea for the students to have an emergency button on their phone that can tell authorities where they are on the campus. I do not think that it is fair for students to be tracked at all times during the day, however it is a good idea for them to be able to press an emergency button quickly in case something bad happens.
I don't think that the GPS cell phones should be required. It seems to me to be a little bit of a annoy thing that the students are forced to do. Having to pay for the phone is annoying problem to begin with, but the tracking feature seem to be the problem. If the student forget to turn off the tracking feature some could always be monitoring them. Which is breaking you privacy and students don't want that.
I don't think students should be required to get one of these. Most college students would never need one and a lot wouldn't ever use one. It is a good idea for someone who might need one and most important want one. If you want it and can afford it then go ahead. But i most certainly don't think they should be required.

I don't think that students she be required to have GPS cell phones because some students don't always take there phone. So if they did need help they couldn't always get it. Some schools have emergency buttons on the side walk and they could use those, instead of having the kids get GPS cell phones.
I do not think that putting a GPS device in all phones on a college campus is a good idea or that it would even affective. There are so many ways that Celle Phones can prove faulty; dead battery, low signal, leave it at home... The safest thing the school could probably do would be to text the students if there is something going on. This would be more cost affective for the students, and the school know how, some are even texting admission information to perspective students.
The advent of using GPS trackers to follow students and be a "Big Brother" to them is a wrong thing to do because the rule infringes on the students constitutional rights of freedom. If this is implemented into government sanctioned schools or private school it will hurt students more than it will help them
I think that students being required to have a GPS cell phone is a little overkill security wise. Some students might be able to afford something that is valuable, but not critical to have.
I think that this is a great way to protect students on campus. However, it is expensive and must come out of the students tuition funds. I feel it should be up to the students to decide if they want that service of safety and not be required. I also don't think students who don't want to be tracked all the time or feel uncomfortable about it should be tracked. However, the emergency button idea is a good idea but should once again be optional.
